I know my first day of community service isn’t exactly going to be a blast. At least I’m used to feeling out of place – I can take the insults that the teenaged volunteers at the special needs ranch throw my way, and emptying trash cans and shoveling horse manure seems pretty simple. I can even deal with the sweltering heat and the cut I get when I fall onto a shovel in the stables. But I certainly don’t expect… Silas . Silas, whose shirt might as well be painted onto his well-built body, whose square jaw and hazel eyes have already made up for my day, who helps me wash out my cut – who tells me he thinks I’m beautiful, when I’m sweaty and covered in dirt and manure.
