Wajdi Mouawad
Twin children Jeanne and Simon want to solve the mystery of their origins. Hiroshima mon amour
1959
Marguerite Duras
One of the most influential works in the history of cinema, Alain Renais' Hiroshima Mon Amour received international acclaim upon its release in 1959 and was awarded the International Critics' Prize at the Cannes Film festival as well as the New York Film Critics' Award. Ostensibly the story of a love affair between a Japanese architect and a French actress visiting Japan to make a film on peace, Hiroshima Mon Amour is a stunning exploration of the influence of war on both Japanese and French culture and the conflict between love and humanity.
Waiting for Godot
1952
Samuel Beckett
The story revolves around two seemingly homeless men simply waiting for someone—or something—named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree, inhabiting a drama spun of their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as mankind’s inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett’s language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existential post-World War II Europe. His play remains one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time.
