Double Dead

Coburn’s been dead now for close to a century, but seeing as how he’s a vampire and all, it doesn't much bother him. The rest of the walking dead, they like brains. He’s smart. Them, not so much. But they outnumber him by about a million to one. And the clotted blood of the walking dead cannot sustain him. Now he’s starving. And nocturnal. And more pissed-off than a bee-stung rattlesnake. The vampire not only has to find human survivors (with their sweet, sweet blood), but now he has to transition from predator to protector-after all, a man has to look after his food supply.

A young woman named Trinity Brown has been shot in the chest, and she’s stayed dead. The potential end to the zombie affliction should be a huge positive, but for a future UK teetering on the brink of becoming a police state, a country where healthcare has never been so well funded because lower mortality rates equal fewer zombies, the truth behind Trinity Brown’s non-resurrection has the potential to cause chaos, which is why a shadowy Government figure has persuaded Helen’s boss to keep a lid on what’s happened, at least for the moment. Now Helen has two days to solve two mysteries. Who killed Trinity Brown, and why did she stay dead?

The Sea Hates a Coward

2015

Schneider Wrack was never a dissident. But since he’s serving the sentence anyway, he may as well become one. Because in the city, the sentence for sedition is death. Death, and then reanimation, before being shipped out to Ocean to work until you fall apart – or something gets you. There’s always a need for fresh bodies in Ocean. In the 70 years the city has been under siege, it’s been the only place to get food, and so the whaling barges work night and day to haul in enough meat to keep three million people from the edge of starvation. Human labour isn’t an option – Ocean’s too big, too cruel, too full of monsters – so it’s the dead that man the whaleboats. They’re meant to be mindless, empty vessels, but the procedure isn’t perfect. Schneider has woken up months into his sentence, trapped in a living hell of meat and brine, and he’s not happy. It’s going to take a lot to stir the workforce into revolt; few of them have all their original limbs, and fewer still can remember their own names. But you’ve got to do what you can with what you’ve got. It’s time to bring hell back to the city. The Sea Hates A Coward is the debut novella of Nate Crowley, who as @FrogCroakley wrote Daniel Barker's seventy-five-day "increasingly nightmarish" birthday party in early 2015, garnering a following of hundreds of fans, featuring in Buzzfeed and setting fire to the social media world...

Grand Amazon

2016

What do you live for if you’re dead? For Schneider Wrack, a rebel made into a monster, it’s freedom, and the chance of understanding who he once was. For Mouana, an executed soldier made into a slave, it’s justice. A world-shaking revolt has given them charge of the titanic whaling ship that was their prison, and now it’s steaming towards the city that killed them. Mouana wants more than revenge – she’s out to destroy the grim technology that enslaved her and thousands of her comrades. But it’s a lot harder to kill an idea than a person, and this idea has deep roots. It’ll bring them into conflict with terrifying powers, test the limits of their failing bodies, and take them far from the worlds of their birth, to the measureless wilderness known only as Grand Amazon. It’s a jungle out there. "Gory, Gross, Glorious." - Cassandra Khaw on The Sea Hates A Coward

A VAMPIRE IN ZOMBIELAND You wouldn’t like Coburn. People don’t, as a rule. And that’s okay, because he doesn’t like people much either. People are food. Five years ago, Coburn went to sleep – wasn’t exactly planned – and he’s just woken up to find most everybody in the world dead. Not dead like him; he looks human, drinks blood. He’s smart. They’re... none of those things. They outnumber him by about a million to one, and their clotted blood cannot sustain him. Now he’s starving, and on the run. He has to find blood, soon, and – like it or not – he’s gonna have to keep an eye on the frail flesh-bags he finds it in. Time for the wolf to turn shepherd. No, Coburn doesn’t like people. But he’ll have to learn to.

The Death and Life of Schneider Wrack

2017

Schneider Wrack was dead. Until he wasn’t. Convicted of a crime he’s almost completely sure he didn’t commit, executed, reanimated, then pressed into service aboard a vast trawler on the terrible world of Ocean, he was set to spend his afterlife working until his mindless corpse falls apart. But now he’s woken up, trapped in a rotting body, arm-deep in the stinking meat and blubber of a sea monster, and he’s not happy. It’s time for the dead to rise up. From the stench and brine of Ocean to the fetid jungle of Grand Amazon, Schneider’s career as a revolutionary won’t be easy. But sometimes a zombie’s gotta do what a zombie’s gotta do… PRAISE FOR NATE CROWLEY ‘Genius’ - Dara Ó Briain ‘Weird and hilarious’ - Buzzfeed ‘Surreal and occasionally horrifying’ - The Daily Dot

Toby Venables
Toby Venables
Author · 4 books

Toby Venables is a novelist, screenwriter and lecturer in Film Studies at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. He grew up watching old Universal horror movies when his parents thought he was asleep, reading 2000 AD and obsessing about Beowulf. There was probably a bit more to it, but he can't quite remember what it was. He has since worked as a journalist and magazine editor—launching magazines in Cambridge, Peterborough, Oxford and Bristol—and once orchestrated an elaborate Halloween hoax for which he built and photographed a werewolf. He still works as a freelance copywriter, has been the recipient of a radio advertising award, and in 2001 won the Keats-Shelley Memorial Prize (both possibly due to typing errors). His first novel (for Abaddon) was The Viking Dead—a historical-zombie-SF mashup which has been described as "A fantastic mix of history, violence and horror" and "ludicrous fun."

Jasper Bark
Jasper Bark
Author · 7 books
Jasper Bark finds writing author biographies and talking about himself in the third person faintly embarrassing. Telling you that he’s an award winning author of four cult novels including the highly acclaimed ‘Way of the Barefoot Zombie’, just sounds like boasting. Then he has to mention that he’s written 12 children’s books and hundreds of comics and graphic novels and he wants to just curl up. He cringes when he has to reveal that his work has been translated into nine different languages and is used in schools throughout the UK to help improve literacy, or that he was awarded the This Is Horror Award for his last anthology ‘Dead Air’. Maybe he’s too British, or maybe he just needs a good enema, but he’s glad this bio is now over.
