Più di trent'anni fa Alan Bennett inanellava una catena di monologhi drammatici per la BBC sotto la sigla Talking Heads. Di recente ne ha estratti dal suo inesauribile cilindro altri due, degni di quella leggendaria compagine. I protagonisti sono nel primo caso una donna «qualunque» che s'innamora del figlio quindicenne e, senza essere Fedra, innesca un meccanismo che, pur mitigato da elementi maliziosi o esilaranti, avrà conseguenze più o meno tragiche. Nel secondo una vedova che si reca regolarmente sul luogo dove ha perso il marito biker, incontrando di volta in volta ambigui interlocutori che le aprono spiragli su piccoli, inconfessabili segreti della sua esistenza. Con Bennett per fortuna non si può mai stare tranquilli.

Bennett's first stage play, Forty Years On, was produced in 1968. Many television, stage and radio plays followed, along with screenplays, short stories, novellas, a large body of non-fictional prose and broadcasting, and many appearances as an actor. Bennett's lugubrious yet expressive voice (which still bears a slight Leeds accent) and the sharp humour and evident humanity of his writing have made his readings of his own work (especially his autobiographical writing) very popular. His readings of the Winnie the Pooh stories are also widely enjoyed.
