Ungenach è il nome della sconfinata proprietà fondiaria nell’Austria Superiore toccata in eredità ai due fratelli Zoiss. Ma, ancorché ricchissimo, splendido agglomerato di frutteti, campi coltivati, boschi, cave, tenute e fabbricati rurali, Ungenach è precisamente quello che ha spinto i due Zoiss a fuggire il più lontano possibile: Karl in Africa, Robert negli Stati Uniti. Per Karl, infatti, rimanere a Ungenach «significa pazzia», e per Robert Ungenach è «un peso spaventoso e nient’altro» – anche il padre, del resto, per tutta la vita «ha sentito Ungenach come un carcere». Immensa devastazione, «rovina della natura e dello spirito», «inferno del cattivo gusto», Ungenach è il labirinto ossessivo dei ricordi e della mente, l’aborrito luogo dell’Origine. E, rimasto unico erede dopo la morte del fratello, Robert si sbarazzerà di tutto con una sconcertante donazione, compiuta «come un delinquente compie il suo delitto» e, beffardamente, a favore di una trentina di assurdi beneficiari, fra cui un «teologo della natura», quattro carcerati e un ricoverato in manicomio. Un atto liberatorio che, di fatto, causerà l’irreversibile estinzione di Ungenach, fosco compendio di ogni realtà fisica e mentale – «poiché è la rovina il punto verso cui tutto converge».

Thomas Bernhard was an Austrian writer who ranks among the most distinguished German-speaking writers of the second half of the 20th century. Although internationally he's most acclaimed because of his novels, he was also a prolific playwright. His characters are often at work on a lifetime and never-ending major project while they deal with themes such as suicide, madness and obsession, and, as Bernhard did, a love-hate relationship with Austria. His prose is tumultuous but sober at the same time, philosophic by turns, with a musical cadence and plenty of black humor. He started publishing in the year 1963 with the novel Frost. His last published work, appearing in the year 1986, was Extinction. Some of his best-known works include The Loser (about a student's fictionalized relationship with the pianist Glenn Gould), Wittgenstein's Nephew, and Woodcutters.
