Concurrent with the first novel, but set in New York and Washington D.C., the book begins in space while the fleet approaches the Earth (the ending of the novel briefly goes into the aftermath of The Final Battle). The commander, Roger, and his subordinates, Angela and Jennifer, arrive and after the Visitors are revealed, the resistance group named White Christmas is formed to combat them. They now have to face Roger's devious plan: to surpass the human food storage by emptying one of New York's neighborhoods next to their chemical plants.

While Donovan pursues and recaptures Diana, the LA resistance tries to revive those stored on the mothership after capturing it in the events of the first book. However they are faced with the converted government, and several of the "sixth column", surviving Visitors on board the mothership who are still loyal to Diana, who is imprisoned on board after her capture.

In Chicago, the Visitors' grip on the Earth has been freed with the release of the Red Dust, the bacteria discovered in the digestive tract of Robin Maxwell's hybrid children, which killed the more reptilian twin. Cultured and dried, and dispersed via hot air balloons across the world by the resistance, it causes near-instant death to Visitors, but can also cause mutation, sterility and ultimately, death, to all Earth life in excessive amounts. Prior to this event, High Captain Gerald manages to finally storm the resistance, but with little success, as they were currently liberating the Chicago Art Museum, the Visitors' ground base. Seconds before the commander of the Chicago Mothership, Alicia, calls him back for withdrawal (after the Red Dust is deployed worldwide), he is able to distribute anti-toxin from the resistance base into his shock troopers. Though Alicia is frustrated at her subordinate, she gives him a chance to redeem himself, which Gerald jumps at, as unknowingly to Alicia, Gerald is a double agent. Her plan is to convert the resistance, and "unlock the key" to regaining Chicago.

A secret Visitor research station in the Florida Everglades conducts genetic experiments to create Visitor/human hybrids. Set during the unrecorded year between the end of "The Final Battle" and "Liberation Day". Note: This novel was written before the writer's guide was available, and so contradicts the TV series on some points.

The L.A. resistance must return three valuable resistance members to their own regions of the world under the noses of the Visitors while simultaneously picking up a needed weapons shipment and preventing a dastardly new invasion scheme of Lydia's. The first novel to be actually set during the weekly series.

Thanks to the ingenious pressure skins of Commander Fieh Chan, the Visitors maintain a foothold in the Far East and a plan is hatched to convert the greatest martial arts masters in the world to serve the aliens' ends. Set during the unrecorded year between the end of "The Final Battle" and "Liberation Day".

The Visitors engage in an experiment to seed the east coast of the United States with crivits.

Willie arrives in New England to assist a scientist with developing a new toxin against the Visitors, but the aliens are ahead of him.

Science Frontiers develops a new strain of the Red Dust; Donovan's ex-wife comes back into his life.

Barely escaping death from a Visitor ambush, resistance warrior Rick Hurley is rescued by Sheryl Lee Darcy and a band of Texas freedom fighters carrying vital drugs to the sick and wounded of their native state—where the red dust toxin, once fatal to the lizard-like aliens, has lost its effect. The Visitors have placed a stranglehold on the Dallas-Fort Worth area, rounding up the terrified populace for cold storage aboard the Mother Ship. There the Texas resistance strike-and-hide guerrilla raids, aimed at the Visitors' processing centers, keep the inhuman enemy in confusion and disarray. But when Sheryl Lee is taken prisoner, it's Rick who plans a daring rescue, with the help of wild-man rancher Charlie Scoggins, striking at the heart of the enemy stronghold, across hundreds of miles of lizard-held terrain, at the deadly, desperate end. Set after the TV episode "Visitor's Choice".

Diana enacts a two-pronged plot to alter world weather patterns to bring an early, crushing winter and to then contaminate world petroleum supplies and make the needed heating oil unusable.
