Johanna Schopenhauer is probably best known for being the mother of Arthur Schopenhauer, but she was also a very prolific writer in her time and managed to complete twenty-four volumes of work in approximately thirty years. This is a remarkable achievement, when we consider that her writing career began only in1805, when Johanna was almost forty years old. In 1806 she moved to Weimar, where she established a literary salon and became acquainted with Goethe and other writers of that era. In 1819, after losing most of her money through an unfortunate investment, her writing became an important source of income. This is a new translation of the following works by Johanna Liebesheirath Die arme Margareth FROM PERFECT MATCH ( Liebesheirath ) : "At last, I am free! Cecilia is gone and I am standing at the threshold of old Europe, ready to say goodbye forever. Farewell to you too, my only true friend. I want to seek out a new world, to gaze at other stars. I don’t want to see the radiant light that once enchanted me in Cecilia’s arms ever again. I don’t want to share anything with her now." FROM MARGARET (Die arme Margareth) “I am not permitted to go any further,” she said. “I cannot approach that large brightly-lit house. My place is beside the wild forest bird, in the dark woods where the night lives and the owl cries out. But you still have the red sky of dawn to light your way. May God protect you!” Then she turned from us and disappeared in the twilight.
