I'm excited to share my debut novel, Orchid Child, coming June 13 from Liminal Books. Orchid Child fits the categories of visionary and psychological fiction, home to novels I love, like Ruth Ozeki's A Tale for the Time Being, and Eowyn Ivy's The Snow Child. Set in NYC and West Ireland over the course of the 20th century, Orchid Child asks the question, how far would you go to heal the past? My answer is this enchanted family saga that blends mystery, history, magic realism, and romance to map intergenerational trauma and its healing in one Irish American family. Along the way, Orchid Child explores the intersection of ancient Celtic mysticism and 21st century neurodiversity. One otherworldly exchange between the titular orchid child, Teague, and his great-great grandfather, Paddy, hints at how this happens. Teague asks, "How does anything I do or say help somebody who lived a hundred years ago?" Paddy cracks a smile. "I venture at least one of your gifted ancestors is seeing and hearing what's happening to you right this minute in a powerful premonition." "Even if that's true, what good does it do him?" "It might just give him some hope. Hope is a thread that connects you and your ancestors throughout time." For Teague, understanding how he fits in a chain of multigenerational trauma is key to bringing about its healing—for himself, his ancestors, and for those yet to be born. In addition to writing and teaching, I enjoy talking to book clubs and other groups about my writing. I touch on Celtic folklore, ancestry, intergenerational trauma and the prevention and healing of mental health disorders in families.
