Inside Cover—WATCHER is the story of a troubled boy’s journey to finding his identity, unleashed by a part of him he never knew existed within. What sets WATCHER apart from other coming-of-age stories is that the main narrator and one of its central characters is a wolf, whose very existence remains mysterious and invisible until circumstances for the boy and his family become dire. When the wolf’s existence and purpose is revealed, the boy’s character is transformed by the realization the wolf has been with him as a mysterious but unrealized part of his identity his entire life. WATCHER is an age–old story with a cast of villains and heroes but told through the eyes of a unique and unconventional teller who, through a series of gut-wrenching crises that befall the boy and his family, reminds us that just when we think we are alone in the world, we find that someone—or something—has been our WATCHER all along. Back Cover—All I know is that I am a wolf. The leader of a pack of wolves. This is my world. But then I am called to watch the boy, in his world. I do not understand why. I cannot touch the boy or other humans. They do not know I exist. His life is troubled, he is always anxious, I can smell it from his body and see it in his eyes. I do not understand the events that unfold around him; he and his family become entrapped in one crisis after another, tumbling to their end, like a deer I’ve downed, jaws clenched around its neck. But it is these events that, somehow, reveal my existence to the boy and, bring me to understand why I have been called to watch him. And, ultimately, breathe new life into him as a part of his being that he never knew existed. I am the spirit inside him that will help him persevere through family strife, bullying, and the mysteries of emerging into adulthood. This is my story as much as it is his, our lives woven together, forever. I have been and will always be, his WATCHER.
