A painting of a jungle adorned the back wall of the enclosure, and Katherine thought this a cruel mockery. The gorillas performed a cycle of aimlessly wandering about their cage and then sitting motionless until it was time to wander again. The silverback gorilla stood vigilant for a threat that would never come. He looked at the faces peering into his meaningless kingdom with an expression Katherine thought was defiancé."
