Official Description: Augie and Shon spent six debauched nights in Germany proving that gravity was just a suggestion, and six days ignoring that there could be something more than just sex between them. Now it’s been eight months since they parted – Augie for California to finish his dissertation, and Shon to Tanzania to lead the Serengeti Rhino Protection Unit. But those intervening months were full of more heartbreak than either could have imagined. Will their story be over before it really begins? __________ Augie Slade fulfilled one of his life dreams when he worked in Germany as part of a team to repatriate black rhinos to Tanzania. It was supposed to be the culmination of his dissertation and the first step toward a job in Frankfurt, Germany protecting the animal he has spent his life studying. And then he met Shon. Shon is Maasai, one of their fabled warriors, and a member of the elite Serengeti Rhino Protection Unit. He has sworn his life in protection of the black rhinos that dwell in the vast plains of Tanzania. But seven months into his work a rhinoceros is de-horned and killed, leaving the Unit angry and disheartened. They cannot fail again. Shon cannot fail again. There are only 70 black rhinos left in the Serengeti and both Augie and Shon have dedicated their lives to ensuring that number grows. They share a passion for their work, and a vicious protectiveness for the hunted, but there may be more keeping them apart than can ever keep them together. Original Prompt: Dear Author, I'd dreamed of the Serengeti for years, the wind in the trees, the smell of the dust, the quiet. A place where animals still belong, and we are the visitors. I had a Jeep full of food, water purification gear and a solar charger for my laptop. Six months, and I'd have the data for my dissertation. And then I'd have to go back. First night in camp, I heard the lions prowling around, investigating the tires on the Jeep. Next morning, he was there, cooking a small pot of stew over a fire, dark skin warm as cocoa against the forest green of his uniform. This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love is Always Write" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story. Sam is a wandering queer romance author who sleeps little and reads a lot. Happiest in a foreign country. Twitchy when not mentally in motion. Her name is Sam, not Sammy, definitely not Samantha. She’s a dark/cynical/jaded person, but hides that darkness well behind her obsession(s) with shiny objects.
