Through odd circumstances, Jack Winder becomes a helper for his village's healing wizard. As part of his duties, Jack is ordered to travel the length of Corand to the capital city to bring back a priceless object of power, the Serpent’s Orb. He soon finds that he is not the only one after the orb and someone is willing to kill to get it.

Jack Winder is sent on another errand by the mercurial Fasher Tempest. This time he heads south into the country of Tesoria accompanied by two Tesorian wizards. The country is rent into factions with each one rebelling against the king in their own fashion. In this turbulent environment, Jack must deliver a warded box to the grand wizard of Tesoria far south of the border. Along the way he must battle with armies, wizards, wolves, and betrayals of all sort as he pursues completing his task.

Jack Winder's mentor has come down with a magical sickness when on his honeymoon. The illness requires an object of power used as a cure. Jack is tasked to find Grishel's Feather and take it to the seaside village where his mentor and his new wife suffer from the debilitating effects of the malady. Jack has no idea where the feather is other than in the adjacent foreign country. He must retrieve the feather even though he is now saddled with his chief rival, the obnoxious Penny Ephram, and get the object to his mentor in time to save him.

Jack Winder travels to a far country to retrieve an ancient object. In order to proceed to recover the object is, Jack must learn a new culture and a new philosophy if he is to succeed. The quest is complicated by a revolution spawned by an enemy organization. The learning process takes much longer than expected, giving his enemies time to build strength while Jack and his group prepare to capture the object. Every step along the way is fraught with peril and possible death.

When Penny Ephram’s first day at the Dorkansee Healing Institute ends badly, she refuses to quit. Penny develops a passion to learn how to be a proper lady and a better swordswoman. Her relationship with Jack Winder puts Penny in peril from a suspected Black Finger student. Penny is abducted just as Jack Winder completes his task in the country of Masukai prompting him to rush northward to rescue Penny. To save Penny, he must navigate past an angry god, an angry goddess, and the murderous Black Finger Society of Lajia.

Jack Winder and Penny Ephram travel to Antibeaux, a cold land to the northeast of Corand to retrieve a hidden mask that allows the recipient to glimpse the future. With the intent of inserting themselves into Antibeaux society in the capital of Briston to find the location of the mask, Jack's group is joined by a mysterious wizard. They quickly learn that Antibeaux is embroiled in a clash of politics that may turn into an insurrection at the very time Jack's group is trying to find the mask. Jack finds himself fighting the factions and an angry goddess all the while as he tries to retrieve the ancient treasure.

Jack Winder ventures to the country of Bornan to find and eliminate a curse that has ruined the entire country. The Bornan wizard that accompanies him has a vested interest in Jack’s latest errand and warns him that the buckle has been lost for two thousand years and won’t be easy to find. Along the way, they have to survive hostile nomads, hostile wizards, and hostile lands to find the buckle and destroy it to eliminate the curse.

Jack Winder joins up with Tanner and Helen, again. With Penny and Jorey in tow they are about to head to Tesoria to see about a renewed attempt by the Black Finger Society to take over that country when they are stopped before they begin. Someone has abruptly changed the behavior of the king of Corand. They must travel in the opposite direction from their errand to find out what is happening to King Jordan before they can travel to Tesoria to do the same thing. Tesoria is also on the brink of a Black Finger takeover when Jack and his group arrive. As they attack the problem, Jack finds that he has to use his unique powers to stop the Black Fingers and fight Borigore. It isn’t easy fighting a god.
