The friendship that produced this collaborative work defining friendship began autumn of 1991 in a classroom at Singapore American School, Republic of Singapore, between a shy, quiet 12-year-old student and a crusty middle-aged teacher. In the subsequent thirty years, there have been a hundred letters, sixty books, kind and encouraging words scattered throughout the world and most recently between Phoenix, Arizona and Wolseley, Saskatchewan, Canada. We used our own friendship and our individual experiences to fuel the vocabulary used to create the oneness between Mary Catherine, Naomi, and Richard. From Kahlil Gibran’s Prophet — “And a youth said, Speak to us of friendship. And he answered, saying: Your friend is your needs answered. He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving. And she is your board and your fireside. For you come with your hunger and you seek the peace.” This is what we have found, and this is now The Wild Geese are Home.
