يُعتبر محمد علي باشا من أهم حكَّام مصر في العصر الحديث؛ فإنجازاته في المجال العسكري والاقتصادي والاجتماعي سواء على النطاق المحلي أو الإقليمي أو العالمي تركت آثارًا عميقة على المجتمع المصري، وغيَّرت بشكل جوهري من طبيعة الدولة والنظام السياسي في مصر. في هذا الكتاب يقدم خالد فهمي رؤية جديدة لشخصية الباشا؛ رؤية تتتبع مشواره الطويل مُنذ نشأته في بلدة قولة حتى وفاته في القاهرة عن عمر يناهز الثمانين عامًا. وبالاعتماد على مصادر فريدة قلَّما رجع إليها المؤرخون من قبل والتي تتراوح بين مكاتبات الباشا الغنية بالتفاصيل لأوامره العديدة لمرءوسيه، وتقارير القناصل الأوربيين لكتابات الرحالة الأجانب؛ تلقي السيرة التي يقدمها خالد فهمي في هذا الكتاب الضوء على نواحٍ عديدة من شخصية «ولي النعم»؛ اللقب الأثير لمحمد علي، سواء تلك المتعلقة بعلاقاته بأولاده وأقربائه وأتباعه، أو تلك المتعلقة بأهدافه وأطماعه، أو تلك المتعلقة بمخاوفه وهواجسه. كما تتتبع هذه السيرة سياسات الباشا وأفعاله مُنذ حلَّ بمصر في أوائل القرن التاسع عشر غريبًا عنها لا جاه له ولا مال، حتى وفاته بعد حوالي نصف قرن وقد أسس حكمًا أسريًّا استمرَّ لمدة قرن كامل.
