「無頼派」「新戯作派」の破滅型作家を代表する昭和初期の小説家、太宰治の短編小説。初出は「文藝」[1945(昭和20)年]。醜い妻と冷酷な親戚にいじめられていた湖南省の貧しい書生・魚容をめぐる話。魚容は、ついに妻を殴って家を飛び出し郷試に応じるが、落第し故郷に帰ることになる。単なる原作の模倣ではなく、虚構を加えることによって、物語の背景や登場人物の心理などを細かく描写している。
