「無頼派」「新戯作派」の破滅型作家を代表する昭和初期の小説家、太宰治の初期短編。初出は「文化公論」[1934(昭和9)年]。「黒木舜平」という筆名で書かれた作品で、困窮の状況下、生活費を稼ぐために試作されたものだとされる。なりゆきで新進作家を騙ってしまった作家が恋愛感情に苦しむという物語だが、太宰自身「たんてい小説」と呼んだ推理小説風の展開は太宰にしては珍しいもので、後年の読者はその内容に驚くこととなった。
