「無頼派」「新戯作派」の破滅型作家を代表する昭和初期の小説家、太宰治の短編小説。初出は「新潮」[1940(昭和15)年]。妻による、画家として成功をおさめた夫への語りかけという形式の作品で、成功を機に変わってしまった夫への思いが綴られている。太宰自身が、「私の心の中の俗物根性をいましめた」(「あとがき」)と書いているように、妻による俗物化した男への批判と読める。
