The B&N Sci-Fi & Fantasy Blog presents an original short story by Hugo Award nominee Sarah Gailey. A Victorian comedy of manners: Androids, bad clams, bad men, and one ambitious kitchen girl. Nadia is having a disastrous evening. Dinner simply did not go as planned: Isaac had not taken the news of her engagement well, and depositing him in a tub full of ice had done nothing to restart his overheated processors. Her beautiful dress was covered in blood. And now, she was feeling very warm herself. If only she could cool down, plug in, and recharge her systems... Stephen is having a dreadful evening. That stuffy old Isaac had balked when Nadia told him of their engagement. And now, he wasn't feeling too well himself. Shouldn't have eaten so many damn oysters... Ada is having an interesting evening. Miss Nadia is acting strangely, and Mr. Isaac appears none too well. She doesn't trust that Mr. Stephen, but if she plays things right, she might just make her way out of the kitchen and into a higher station. The one she deserves.
