Ambientada en el siglo XVII, cuando los juristas suecos ilustrados dejaron de ejecutar mujeres por brujería, esta novela de Strindberg, inédita en castellano, fue publicada en 1890, en medio de la tormenta sentimental por la que atravesaba el escritor a raíz de una crisis con su infiel esposa. La confusión con la que vivió este episodio se refleja en la ambigüedad del retrato que ofrece de Tekla Clement, la «bruja» a la que se refiere el título de la novela.

Along with Henrik Ibsen, Søren Kierkegaard, Selma Lagerlöf and Hans Christian Andersen he is arguably the most influential and famous of all Scandinavian authors. Strindberg is known as one of the fathers of modern theatre. His work falls into two major literary movements, Naturalism and Expressionism. He is widely read in Sweden and internationally to this day.
