Alice begged Carroll to write down the stories for her, and he responded with Alice's Adventures Under Ground, a hand-lettered book. Carroll reworked and expanded the storybook when a visitor to the Liddell home saw it and decided it should be published. The book's appearance at a time when children's literature was often designed to teach moral lessons perplexed critics, who failed to comprehend the absurdity that so enthralled its young readers. Carroll, on the other hand, understood how children's minds functioned, and the way he turned logic on its head appealed to their sense of the absurd.
