The wide-ranging influence of Asian art has pervaded artistic styles all over the world throughout history. For example, the protagonists of the Art Nouveau, Impressionist and Art Deco movements—as well as individual artists such as Gustav Klimt and Vincent Van Gogh—were greatly inspired by the sharp perspective, linear emphasis and vibrant colours employed in the exotic art and artefacts of the Far East. The works examined in Asian Art range from the beginning of the eleventh century to the present day, and represent artists from a number of countries including China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Tibet, Indonesia, Burma, Cambodia and Vietnam. A wide variety of techniques and materials are explored, so the works are grouped together according to their media, with sections on paintings, prints & screens, ceramics, statues & figures, objets d'art and textiles & accessories. Asian Art, which includes exquisite works by Zhang Daqian, Ando Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, gives an informative and beautifully illustrated overview of the rich diversity that characterizes the art of this fascinating continent.
