Questo racconto-inchiesta è stato pubblicato nel 1971, ha avuto dalla critica - non soltanto italiana - un vasto ed entusiastico consenso, è stato ristampato nel 1977: ma resta, tra i libri di Sciascia, il meno conosciuto. Tradotto subito in francese, ha appagato i rousselatres svelando (e al tempo stesso accrescendo) il mistero di quella morte a Palermo, nel vecchio e famoso albergo delle Palme; ma sarebbe del tutto ingiusto lasciare un simile racconto nella sfera del culto tributato a Raymond Roussel. Si tratta proprio di un racconto, e tra i più interessanti che Sciascia abbia scritto.

Sciascia perhaps, in the end, wanted to prove that the corruption that was and is endemic in Italian society helps only those who are part of the secret societies and loyalties and the political classes.
