This novella by Anna Seghers (born Netty Reiling) was first published in Germany in 1929and won the Kleist Prize. This translation by Margaret Goldsmith was published in New York the following year. It tells of the doomed attempt by fishermen in a nameless country to obtain more than starvation wages from their bosses.
