Who, What, Where, When, Die
2011
Avery Shaw is having a bad week. First, she had to cover a story on a barricaded gunman who likes to dance naked in his window. Second, she's receiving death threats with her morning newspaper. Lastly, and most importantly, her mom keeps vetoing her outfit choices.
It's all in a day's work for this hardworking, if easily distracted, reporter.
Avery Shaw is hot on the trail of the story, even if it means tangling with her hot ex-boyfriend—the county sheriff—and the equally hot, if slightly shadier pawnshop owner down the street.
Getting the story is going to be totally worth it—that is if Avery can survive the week.

If It Bleeds, It Leads
2012
Local news reporter Avery Shaw’s week is going from bad to worse.
It’s bad enough there’s a dead body in the parking lot of the paper, but when the investigation into the death leads to drugs – and a tie to her own family – things continue to spiral downward.
If she could focus on that, though, it would just be another normal week. Constant run-ins with both the men in her life – neither of whom seems to be showing her the level of respect she feels she deserves – are making things more stressful than they need to be.
Avery is going to get the story – even if it means taking down her own cousin. Surviving to file that story, though, that’s a whole other problem altogether.

#3
Buried Leads
2013
Journalists are supposed to report the news, not be it. For Avery Shaw, though, that's easier said than done.
Avery has spent the last month on her boss' list—you know the one—and she can't figure out a way to get off it. When a missing persons case involving a wealthy mother in the northern suburbs surfaces, Avery figures the best way to get back in his good graces is break the story of the year.
There's just a few problems standing in her way. First off, she's being stalked online—and it's starting to make her life difficult. She's also decided to actually start dating the hot pawnshop owner, Eliot, who saved her life a few weeks back. That sounds good in theory, but she's constantly crossing paths with her ex-boyfriend and that tends to make things uncomfortable (to say the least).
When you compound that with the fact that this missing persons case is more than it appears—and the office tool has been assigned to the story with her—Avery manages to get in over her head. Again.
Avery is sure that she can work things out to her advantage—as long as she doesn't die in the pursuit of yet another story in which she manages to get personally involved.
Warning: These characters are sarcastic and snarky—and they do tend to swear when things get out of hand. Read only if you want a good laugh—and you aren't easily offended.

Shot Off the Presses
2014
Life should be good for Avery Shaw. She's got a hunky new boyfriend in local pawnshop owner (and sometime private detective) Elliot Kane, her cousin Lexie swears she'll be moving out of her house one day "real soon" and her family has been relatively quiet for a whole week. That's practically perfection in Avery's world.
Then, what appears to be a random freeway shooting resulting in the death of a young mother, causes upheaval on just about every front. County Sheriff Jake Farrell announces that the same gun used in the current shooting was also used in a similar shooting one county over a few weeks before. A joint task force is assembled and the denizens of southeastern Michigan are on edge – including Elliot and Jake, who still can't quite seem to make amends with one another.
Avery is on the case, but she's got a few distractions blocking her way. The commander of the local National Guard base is acting cagey, there's a new public relations liaison in the sheriff's department that is laying down the law about media leaks and her grandfather is refusing to report for jury duty which, most likely, will result in his own incarceration.
When you couple that with Carly's upcoming wedding, the opening of Lexie's new yoga studio and Avery's mom's insistence that Thundercats shoes are not appropriate footwear for public outings, and Avery's happiness quotient continues to plummet.
Avery is determined to get the story – even when it becomes apparent that her efforts have turned the shooter's attention to her. When Avery finally does find an answer, will she survive to tell anyone about it?
These books are full of sarcasm and are a little bit snarky—so read only if you like to laugh and you aren't easily offended. This is the fourth book in the Avery Shaw Mystery series.

The Preditorial Page
2014
Is speed-dating okay when you're in a relationship? It is when you're looking for a killer, especially in Avery Shaw's world.
A naked body has been discovered in the nearby Clinton River, and while Sheriff Jake Farrell is keeping his cards close to his vest, Avery has another avenue of Eliot.
It doesn't hurt that the medial examiner seems to have a crush on her—and verbal diarrhea—and she keeps stumbling on information that propels her ahead of the pack.
Unfortunately for Avery, when she discovers information that no one else has—and she finds herself on top of the media game—she has to make a decision, and that decision is going to tick off everyone she knows.
Between Jake's anger, Eliot's worry, and Grandpa's insistence that you can't force a handicap parking space on a business owner, Avery has her hands full.
Lexie has a new place to live, Carly is adjusting to married life and Avery is trying to convince the men in her life that she's not in danger, despite all evidence to the contrary.
It's a busy week—kind of.
In actuality, it's just a normal week for this hard-headed reporter, until someone's eye focuses on Avery and she finds herself in real danger. Again.
Jake is angry and Eliot is torn, but Avery has an idea on how to solve the case. The only problem is, when all is said and done, someone is going to be shot ... and Avery is going to regret every move she's made on this case when it happens.
Will someone survive to see another Avery Shaw catastrophe?

Misquoted & Demoted
2015
Avery Shaw’s life is a mess – and that’s putting it mildly.
County Commissioner Tad Ludington is on the warpath, and his complaints haven’t fallen on deaf ears. The new publisher is watching the staff – and Avery is of particular interest. As punishment, he’s decided to bust her down to sports – and no one is happy about it.
The sports editor hates her, and the rest of the staff is struggling to tolerate her. As for Avery? Her new world has sent her into a tailspin, and no one can console her – even long-suffering boyfriend Eliot, who can’t deal with Avery’s depression (or constant attitude).
She desperately wants to chase the story swirling around the dead girl found on a high school’s football field. Instead, she’s forced to sit through wrestling meets and basketball games.
She’s not happy, and that means everyone around her isn’t happy. No, to be fair, they’re downright miserable.
When Avery’s current assignment crosses paths with the story she wants to chase, things come to a head. There’s a tangled web of steroids, obnoxious teenagers, and sketchy coaches to unravel. When you compound that with Grandpa and Mario’s new business venture – they’re running a traveling food truck and taking it to local high schools – Avery’s tenuous grasp on reality is starting to fray.
Then there’s that whole “Jake thing” – you know, how he told her he loved her when he thought he was dying – and Avery is also expending a lot of energy hiding from him.
Can this long-suffering reporter climb her way out of sports and survive when she becomes a target yet again?

Headlines & Deadlines
2015
Listening Length: 8 hours and 20 minutes
Avery Shaw is back on the story, and she's better - or maybe more bitter - than ever.
After a brief (but not brief enough, by her estimation) sojourn into sports, Avery finds herself back in the news department. She's got one thing on her mind: bringing perennial nemesis Tad Ludington to his knees.
Unfortunately for her, another story pops up, and Avery has to divide her limited attention span to accomplish multiple goals.
When a local woman goes missing and is later found dead, Avery finds a tangled web of sex, lies, and... well... just overall freaky people to focus on. One man is identified by witnesses, but another may be guilty: the woman's husband.
When Avery starts investigating, she finds the husband is involved in an underground scene that involves bondage-and-submission sex clubs - something that goes against one intrepid reporter's very nature. Avery convinces Eliot to take her to a club, and the new world is full of mystery, danger, and a lot of baby oil.
Between hiding a source, grappling with her family, and an imminent Valentine's Day that has her stomach in knots, Avery has her hands full.
When things come to a head, Avery's life is in danger. Again. Can Eliot and Jake keep her safe? And can Eliot manage to keep his surprise holiday plans under wraps and really give Avery something to remember when the big day finally arrives?
Only time will tell, and Avery may be running out of it.

Misprints & Mistakes
2016
Avery Shaw is in a funny spot.
Her best friend is pregnant, her cousin’s girlfriend is up to something and her boyfriend has serious issues on the brain.
When teenager Sierra Jackson goes missing, Avery is in a unique position to scoop everyone. The girl’s fighting family is more concerned with a messy divorce and pointing fingers than helping find Sierra, so Avery becomes obsessed with discovering her whereabouts on her own.
When allegations of misconduct land on Avery, things spiral out of control. Instead of dealing with her issues, she picks a fight with her long-suffering boyfriend Eliot and the ensuing argument is one for the ages.
Avery has to deal with the fallout of false accusations, get her boyfriend back – which involves (gulp) apologizing – and find a missing girl before the unthinkable happens.
It’s all in a day’s work for this hardworking reporter – and the world better look out when she decides to go on the warpath.
Avery knows all about fighting families, but she also knows about loyalty. She’s going to find the missing girl if it’s the last thing she does – and it very well might be.

Bylines & Skylines
2016
Life is changing for Avery Shaw.
She’s searching for a house with her boyfriend Eliot so they can officially move in together. She’s been gifted special passes to Macomb County’s comic book convention – and she couldn’t be more excited. She’s also been put in charge of her most hated enemy at work, and the power is going straight to her head.
When Eliot lets Avery visit the convention center early, the duo stumble across a dead body and Avery’s happy week is thrown into turmoil. She’s determined to find answers and figure out who killed the victim, but she has her hands full with other things – including her personal life – as well.
Her former boyfriend Jake Farrell is in charge of security at the convention center – with an assist from Eliot – and he’s dealing with his own personal issues. In addition to jealousy over Avery and Eliot moving forward, he finds his relationship with his girlfriend Cara going down the drain.
Comic book conventions are filled with funny folks, and Avery is happy to meet all of them – no matter how odd. As she gets closer to a killer, though, she becomes the new target.
Jake and Eliot have to work overtime to keep Avery safe, but in the end, she’s the one who has to save the day if she expects those around her to survive.
In a world full of superheroes, Avery may be the most wonderful of them all … as long as she lives to tell the tale, of course.

Off the Record
2017
Camping is supposed to be a peaceful and relaxing time … unless you’re Avery Shaw, of course. No, when you’re Macomb County’s most intrepid reporter, camping is akin to murder … or a very slow and painful death by disease-carrying bugs.
That’s what Avery thinks as she takes a well-earned vacation with her boyfriend Eliot Kane. When the duo stumbles across a body at a local festival, Eliot has to force Avery to ease up on the suspicion and embrace the vacation decadence. She’s out of her coverage area, after all, and she’s supposed to be taking it easy. Eliot wants rest and relaxation but Avery is pining for adventure.
When Avery returns to work the same carnival workers hit town for Mount Clemens’ annual festival, and another body drops as soon as they arrive. Avery thinks it’s fate but Eliot isn’t so sure.
Between moving into her new house, hiding from her overzealous mother while shunning the woman’s decorating instincts and potentially stirring a race riot when local politicians fail to care about an underprivileged victim, Avery has her hands full.
Danger is closing in on Avery, and it’s coming from different directions. From nefarious politicians to shady carnival workers, Avery has her pick of suspects. When she finally zeroes in on one, though, things could become dangerous … for Avery.
Can Avery save herself when she uncovers a story bigger than she ever dreamed? Or will she fall victim to a killer’s hatred and become another victim?

Unwritten & Underwater
2017
Avery Shaw is living the dream … kind of.
She’s officially moved to her dream house and her boyfriend Eliot Kane is making her host a housewarming party to show off the new digs to her family. All is going well – other than the endless arguments over food and hiding from Avery’s family, of course – until one of Avery’s enemies comes calling.
Avery’s former boyfriend Jake Farrell broke up with Cara Carpenter weeks before but she’s still stalking him … and Avery in the process. When Cara turns up dead at a high-profile event, not only is Jake a suspect, but Avery and Eliot are, too.
The Michigan State Police wrestle the investigation from Jake, promptly turning Avery from the hunter to the hunted. The state police investigator assigned to the case is all up in Avery’s business – and Avery is cracking under the pressure even as she insists on covering the case, much to almost everybody’s chagrin.
From the stress associated with the new house, Grandpa’s constant naked visits to the pool, and Eliot’s insistence that Avery own up to something illegal, things are starting to get tense.
Avery is on her heels for a bit before starting to put the pieces together. When the truth comes out, though, the answers are welcome but the danger is not.
Can Avery survive to irritate everyone another day? Or will Michigan’s favorite reporter finally succumb to a mouth she can’t quite seem to control?

Extra! Extra! Dead All About It
2018
The primary election is almost here and Avery Shaw is in her glory. Her boss has unleashed her on the leading candidates - including two of whom she downright loathes - and Macomb County's leading reporter (and pot-stirrer extraordinaire) is about to turn the election on its ear.
She just needs to find a story first.
When her nemesis Tad Lancaster loses a volunteer, Avery sniffs out a bigger story… or at least she thinks she does. She has a pile of documents, too many insidious ideas to wrangle, and a long-suffering boyfriend who can do nothing but shake his head.
Avery is determined to find out the truth, even if it doesn't lead to Lancaster's downfall. She only has a limited time to do it, too, and the clock is ticking down to election day.
In short order, Avery has to uncover a pile of financial corruption, irritate her co-workers to the point where they don't want to steal her story, hook her ex-boyfriend up with a new girlfriend, survive family dinner, convince her boyfriend she's not chasing ghosts but rather something that's really there, and save Macomb County's election process for the people.
Oh, she also needs to figure out a way to avoid a baby shower, too.
It's all in a day's work for one hard-working and fast-talking reporter. She just needs to survive the final showdown to prove to everyone exactly how superior she really is.

On Deadline & Under Fire
2018
There’s nothing Avery Shaw loves more than a challenge... at least when it comes to tracking down a story. The challenge she’s facing this time is the one thing she might not be able to overcome, though. Vacation. That’s right, not only is Southeastern Michigan’s busiest reporter off work for a week... but she’s also on the receiving end of a visit from her boyfriend’s mother. Eliot Kane is tough as nails but he’s obviously nervous about the two most important women in his life crossing paths.
The fact that he’s nervous makes Avery agitated... and she worries about very little other than who she can upset and how quickly she can make her enemies cry. As luck would have it, Avery stumbles on a story when she should be enjoying her time off. A high-rise apartment fire leaves one dead... and ties to organized crime are abundant. The only thing Avery knows about the mob is what television and movies have taught her. That doesn’t mean she’s not keen to learn.
Avery is in a pickle. She has to uncover the motives behind a murder, get her boyfriend’s mother to like her without losing herself, and keep her family out of trouble even though they’re sniffing around and causing mischief. Oh, and she has to pull it all off without melting down or letting Eliot know what she’s up to. Things are about to get wacky and dangerous in Avery’s world. She wouldn’t have it any other way... even if it ultimately kills her.

Above the Fold & Below the Belt
2019
Avery Shaw has taken on her fair share of jerks.
Often, she’s considered the jerk when she takes them down … a role she gladly relishes.
Now, though, she’s taking on a whole faction of jerks.
It seems a battle of the sexes is brewing in Macomb County. A local shock jock, a man who believes women should be home tending children and keeping the house clean while men bring home the bacon, is on trial for sexually harassing his underlings.
His followers believe he’s innocent. Every female empowerment group in the state – and ultimately the nation – believes he’s guilty. That means it’s a media circus, and there’s nothing Avery likes more than a circus.
She has her hands full with this one, though. She very clearly agrees with one side but there seems to be something wrong with the underlying story. When one of the radio personality’s followers is shot in the middle of a rally, ensuring he’s a martyr for the cause, Avery realizes there’s a path to follow … and it’s long and winding.
Avery knows who she wants to win. She also knows someone isn’t telling the truth. It’s her job to find out which side is lying.
It’s all hands on deck for another zany adventure, and everyone is along for the ride. Who’s left standing at the end is anyone’s guess, but Avery smells blood in the water … and she’s going to find the truth no matter who goes down in the process.

New Media & Old Grudges
2020
Avery Shaw likes to win. Unfortunately, her single-minded focus on being declared victor tends to get her into trouble. That’s never more true than when she decides to take on her archnemesis Tad Ludington.
With an election coming up, Avery is ready to let her freak flag fly in an attempt to get Tad to show his true colors on television … thus sabotaging his chance at getting into office. That backfires when, after a truly epic meltdown, Tad is shot and left for dead in his own home.
Sheriff Jake Farrell knows Avery isn’t guilty but his belief doesn’t matter when the case is taken away from him and given to the Michigan State Police. The incoming investigator zeroes in on Avery almost instantly … and makes her life a living hell.
In addition to Tad, who is fighting for his life in the hospital, Avery also has to grapple with Eliot’s former employee Fawn, a woman who won’t stop flapping her lips about Avery’s probable guilt … all because she holds a grudge and finally has a platform to express it.
Avery is in a bind. She’s been banned from covering Tad’s attack and the election, and she’s being called a “suspect” on every television station in the state. If she wants to clear her name, she’s going to need help.
There’s little more she loathes than asking for help. She has no choice this time.
Avery has always attracted weirdos. This go-around, those weirdos are going to come to her defense. It’s going to take a motley band of colorful characters to save Macomb County’s favorite intrepid reporter.
Will they be up for the challenge?

Mayhem & Mistletoe
2020
Avery Shaw has the world at her fingertips … and a pile of dead Santas near the railroad tracks. Interestingly, she’s more focused on the Santas than her personal life, but only because she’s been warned that a proposal is imminent from her live-in love Eliot Kane and she needs to look somewhere else – anywhere else will do – rather than accept what he’s trying to offer.
Avery never pictured herself married but it appears it might be happening … no matter how she tries to dodge and weave. The Santas make an enticing distraction, so Avery throws herself in with gusto.
Tracking the Santas isn’t easy because Macomb County Sheriff Jake Farrell doesn’t want the names released. He lets one slip, though, and that leads Avery on an adventure … all the way down to a halfway house in Detroit.
It’s a big world and some crimes are worse than others. The only common thread Avery can find when chasing this story is a drug ring, and when she pulls that particular thread, everything comes toppling down.
The drug world is dark and seamy and Avery is going to need her guile and wits to survive this one. Even if she comes out on the other side – and that’s a big if – then there’s a proposal waiting.
It’s finally time for Avery Shaw to grow up … at least a little bit. Come along for the ride, because the big moment is finally here. There might even be a murder to solve along the way.

2021
Avery Shaw never saw marriage on the menu – and when she did, she avoided it like liver and onions – but it appears her life is about to change. She simply can’t decide if it’s for better or worse.
With matrimony barreling down on her, she needs a distraction, and she gets it in the form of a warning. Apparently, she’s on the hit list for a local dealer who is trying to move in on turf she’s responsible for cleaning up, and news that she could be marked for death has her fiancé Eliot Kane in a tailspin.
Avery likes it when things line up her way. Unfortunately, very little is going how she envisioned in her life right now. Between her archnemesis Tad Ludington being fully recovered and back to his old tricks and her mother demanding a say in wedding preparations, Avery has her hands full.
The drug trade in Macomb County runs deeper than anybody anticipated, and the more Avery digs, the more she realizes that the case she thought was closed up tight is still open and ongoing. With an intern on her tail demanding attention, Avery is determined to uncover a secret so big it could blow up certain political circles within the county.
Eliot is by her side but his fear regarding the new people in Avery’s life is palpable… as is Sheriff Jake Farrell’s annoyance when he realizes what Avery is chasing. He wants her cut off from information, which isn’t something she will just sit back and accept.
It’s a war of the worlds this go-around for Avery, and the only chance she has to walk down the aisle is to figure out exactly what is going on. That’s easier said than done when she’s got a price on her head and people actively trying to thwart her every move.

Hard Hitting & Misleading
2021
Avery Shaw is back from her honeymoon and on the prowl for a story. She wants to prove that marriage has softened her – nothing ever could – and the way she’s going to do that is by rocking the news world with something monumental.
Then a body drops in her neighborhood, only blocks away from her house, and the hunt is on.
The victim is divorced, having an affair with a married co-worker, and generally unlikable. Avery has multiple places to look for a suspect … and then another woman dies only a block away from Avery’s house and the entire dynamic of the story changes.
Avery’s new husband Eliot is worried, enough so that he taps Sheriff Jake Farrell to help. Avery’s anger with Jake hasn’t diminished but now they’re working as a group to track down a deadly killer.
Avery doesn’t want help but she needs it, because someone is watching her house and, more importantly, her. Eliot is beside himself and begins upgrading their security system but it doesn’t feel like enough.
Avery is supposed to cover the news, not become part of it. This time the headline that’s coming for her includes the word “victim,” however, and she’s having none of it.
She’s a strong, capable woman, and if she has to take down a serial killer, she’s going to do it … as long as she’s not taken down first.
Her team is large and in charge and it’s going to take all of them working together. Even then, they may not be strong enough to stem the tide of death washing over Macomb County.
It’s time. Avery is ready for war.

Her boss is trying to force her to cover pageant stories. Her husband is trying to placate her. And the sheriff? He’s convinced she’s losing her mind.
Avery doesn’t play around, however, and she keeps digging … despite the numerous distractions she’s got going. What she finds is a huge operation, and when it’s time to take it down, she’s the one in danger of not only losing her life but also her freedom.

Opinionated & Out of Control
2022
Avery Shaw wants things to go back to normal but it’s not easy when she’s the current darling of the Detroit media market. Everybody wants a piece of her, and she prefers covering the news rather than being part of it. That’s why she jumps at the chance to cover a quadruple murder on the lake, even though it’s her day off.
Avery realizes right away that the murders weren’t a crime of passion. No, this was a planned hit, and it leads her to look at the old mob faces in the county, who don’t exactly want to invite her into their homes.
When has not being wanted ever stopped Avery? Never, and that’s not changing today.
With war brewing at home thanks to some pesky ducks, a family that refuses to stay out of her business, and a new television reporter trying to be her, Avery has her hands full. That doesn’t mean she’s going to give in to defeat.
Mob hits are one thing. Hits that target children are another. Avery refuses to let the case go, even when it seems the killer has decided to target her.
Avery doesn’t lose. Winning this one might be more than she can handle, however. Not all answers are welcome, and when the truth comes out on this one, Avery might just find she would’ve been better off letting it go.

Finding a motive for the shooting should be easy, but when a secretive lifestyle minister inserts himself into the investigation, Avery is left spinning. He’s got a colorful past and an army of followers willing to fight for him.
What he doesn’t have is Avery Shaw. She’s determined to uncover the truth, even if it means putting herself in danger. When Grandpa and Mario decide to help—Mario going as far as to position himself as an undercover dancer—Avery has more backup than she bargained for.
Information is coming at her from all sides, and so is danger.
Avery Shaw doesn’t lose. This time, however, there might not be a winner.

Press Releases & Puff Pieces
2023
Avery Shaw is looking forward to a quiet—but entertaining—day in court when a furious plaintiff takes off after losing what Avery believes to be one of the funniest cases she’s ever covered. Avery gives chase because she wants an interview, and her life is thrown into turmoil during the melee that follows.
Alice Wendell likes to sue people. She’s made a name for herself suing neighbors, police officers, dogs, and even dates. That’s why, when a car is aimed at her in downtown Mount Clemens, it’s not exactly a surprise. The ensuing explosion is, however, and Avery is there for the unfortunate aftermath.
When she wakes in the hospital following a serious head injury, she finds Alice is dead…and maybe not from the blast that took out the clocktower downtown.
Once back on her feet, Avery is determined to chase the case. Her boss, husband, and the very annoyed sheriff in charge of the death investigation have other plans…and they involve Avery being pushed to the puff piece beat until she’s no longer shaky from the explosion.
Avery Shaw is not going down without a fight, however. She’s determined to get to the bottom of things, even if she dies in the process.
There’s something hinky going on at the biggest hospital in the county, and Avery won’t stop until she knows exactly what that something is. That puts a target on her back, and the individual aiming at that target just might have the upper hand.
It’s a fight to the finish for Macomb County’s favorite reporter. Will she survive to claim yet another win, or is this finally the end for Avery Shaw?
