Once a week, I walk up the mountain to visit my grandmother. I have a secret. One that I plan on taking to the grave. I take a detour over to her neighbor, Nikolai, once a week as well. There, I watch him chop wood behind my favorite tree. He hardly knows of my existence, but I’m a goner for the older man. Don’t even get me started on that accent of his. If he ever spoke to me, I’d be gone . Who knew a man with an ax could be so tempting? When one of my visits goes wrong, and I’m forced to face the man whom I’ve watched for so long, I’m quick to learn Nikolai isn’t so innocent. He watches me too. Unlike me, he’s not satisfied with seeing me from a distance. After he rescues me from a slip, I’m quick to learn that we both have secrets, more similar than not.
