Au commencement était le mythe, limpide comme les eaux dans lesquelles se baignaient Hermaphrodite et Cénis. Le premier, bel adolescent, fut violé par la nymphe Salmacis ; dans sa détresse, il obtint des dieux, dit Ovide, "que tout homme, après s'être baigné dans ces ondes, n'ait, quand il en sortira, que la moitié de son sexe" ; la deuxième, la plus belle des vierges de Thessalie, fut violée par Neptune, le dieu des eaux, qui exauça son voeu qu'après un tel outrage elle n'en subît plus aucun et lui accorda de n'être plus une femme, mais un guerrier que nulle flèche ne pourrait atteindre.L'insaisissable entre-deux, tel est ce qu'ont en partage ces deux métamorphoses : celle qui aboutit à la fusion mortifère des deux sexes et celle où le changement de sexe procure l'avènement d'un phallus immortel, à condition de ne jamais perpétuer que le même. À l'origine, un viol, une intolérable effraction pour un corps qui se voudrait sans faille et pourrait se combler lui-même. Tout corps étranger est alors menace, tout désir déjà corps étranger. À l'arrivée, deux fantasmes différents, voire opposés, dont le mythe de la bisexualité tente l'impossible conciliation : un fantasme, tout positif, visant à assurer la pleine possession d'un phallus - paternel et maternel - dont l'excellence ne saurait être qu'imparfaitement incarnée, signifiée, dans l'un et l'autre sexe ; un fantasme, négatif, visant à se garantir contre toute séparation-castration-mort, qui conduit à un effacement toujours plus accentué du sujet désirant. Glorieuse métamorphose ou mortelle "amorphose" ?

He studied medicine (specialising in psychiatry) at Paris Medical School and worked at several hospitals. Then, in 1965, after having finished his training as a psychoanalyst, he became a member of the Paris Psychoanalytic Society (SPP), of which he was the president from 1986 to 1989. From 1975 to 1977 he was a vice president of the International Psychoanalytical Association and from 1979 to 1980 a professor at University College London. He died, aged 84, in Paris.
