The forty-fourth Caleb Johnson adventure from Charles Ray! After their traumatic experience with drifters taking over Bear Creek and taking the citizens of the town hostage, Caleb and Flora decide they need to get far away from crowds of people and their problems for a while. They lock up their cabin and, with Snuffy and Dog as companions, head for the high country for a few days of rest. It's not to be. The day they arrive in a peaceful, pristine valley and set up camp, a young girl shows up. Ragged, hungry, and tired, she tells them she’s an orphan running away from a place called Gideon where a self-styled prophet has decided that despite being only fifteen, she is to become his wife. Caleb and Flora decide that this is one problem they cannot ignore, and they set about dethroning the Prophet and restoring peace and tranquility to the valley.

I've been writing since my teens. In addition to writing for several newspapers and magazines in the US, Europe, Asia, and Africa, I've written two books on leadership and a number of fiction works. I'm also a published poet, photographer, and artist. I write in several genres, reflecting my broad reading tastes. I spent 20 years in the army, retiring in 1982 and becoming a diplomat. I've worked in about 10 countries and traveled to about 30 more, mining each for material to write about.
