Jacob Blade and Penny Coppersmith are on the trail of Jack Kilmore, a murderer and bank robber, who is heading north through Colorado. In Bear Creek, Colorado, they meet Caleb and Flora Johnson, two people who, they are told, can help them track Kilmore down. The four of them hit it off initially, but when Caleb learns that Jacob’s idea of bringing an outlaw like Kilmore to justice is draped over his saddle, they find themselves at loggerheads. No stranger to acts of vengeance, Caleb has concluded that vigilante justice is not justice, which is the opposite of Jacob’s views.
