Sebastian Kornblum, a professor from a university back east, wants to do first-hand research of the Cherokee migration from Indian Territory to California in the late 1840s to work in the gold fields. He comes to Bear Creek looking for someone to guide him over what is known as the Cherokee Trail, and is directed to Caleb Johnson, one of the region’s best guides and trackers. Intrigued by Kornblum’s request, Caleb and his wife, Flora, agree and they set out, this time accompanied by Snuffy and Dog, a bear and a dog who consider themselves part of the Johnson family. Along the way, they encounter one obstacle after another, one mystery after another, the most intriguing of which is a mysterious elderly woman who lives with her two servants in a secluded valley in the mountains. It is from her, though, that Kornblum learns much about the Cherokee Trail and the people who traveled it. In the meantime, Caleb and Flora learn about the importance of home.
