She started singing when she was three, and was writing poems and stories at age five. Her father bought her a typewriter when she was 12 so Janet could write for her school newspaper. She has written numerous articles and features for local newspapers and magazines, but prefers writing fiction because it’s more fun and poses greater challenges. She sold her first fantasy stories “The Scourge of the Wicked Kendragon” and “One With Jazz” to TSR and DAW in the late 1980s, and hasn’t stopped writing since. Janet has also co-authored two role-playing game source books, written music for Dragonlance© and The DeathGate Cycle, and edited four anthologies for DAW. The newest is Catopolis. Her short story ”Shadow of the Scimitar” helped DAW’s anthology Under Cover of Darkness win Canada’s Prix Aurora Award (equal to a Hugo) in 2008. With her partner Bruce A. Heard, Janet is now pursuing novels. Together they have written The Lord Protectors of Spire, a fast-paced action-mystery fantasy in an Italian Renaissance setting, and The Shadow of the Rose, which ties artifacts from pre-dynastic Egypt to nefarious dealings and historical characters in Russia, London, and the Middle East during 1916-1917. She also writes non-fiction for local magazines and newspapers. Janet’s pieces on haunted places, restaurant reviews, and area highlights have been published in “At the Lake” Magazine, the “Milwaukee “Journal-Sentinel”, and other periodicals. Her latest article is “Shooting Your Manuscript: Researching Firearms”, which appeared in the Winter 2012 issue of “The Bulletin of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America”. She is currently working on a new piece for the same publication. Janet gives seminars about writing at local libraries, and is a popular panelist at fantasy and science fiction conventions. She also tutors adults and children in various aspects of English. Janet loves playing with her cats, taking long walks, traveling, reading, knitting unique designs for her business Cobweb Creations, doing art and craft shows, cooking, and enjoying good wine and music. Her new blog is at Janet-Deaver-Pack.blogspot.com, and new items for Cobweb Creations are continuously updated at the shop on Facebook.
