Satan's Seed

2000

Spawn of Lucifer.... It all started with the wholesale slaughter of prize cattle at Sam Hinton's ranch at Big Bear Lake. And at the very moment that Sam was calling psychic investigator "Chill" Chillders for help, the broken body of his young son was discovered. The evil was past destroying the Hintons' livestock; it bad begun destroying their lives. Chill was not himself psychic, but his special lady, beautiful Laura Littlefawn was. And so she came with him to Big Bear Lake. Someone among the Hinton family and friends was consorting with Satan—there was evidence of a bloody black mass in an abandoned mine—and it meant a painful trance for Laura to try to invoke the dark forces of the netherworld. But before Chill and Laura could exorcise the devil, more blood would flow, more violence would be committed, and Chill himself would be accused of horrendous crimes, In a shattering finale, Chill and Laura come to grips with an invisible force that operates in a human body-a force that only the ancient elements of fire and flood will finally destroy.

The pathologist reported that Jillee Graham, Los Vegas showgirl, had lost over four pints of blood. The body was unmarked except for a throat wound. Two deep punctures, the skin between ripped away. The veins around the wound had collapsed. The jugular had been pierced very precisely. Blood loss had been rapid. Too rapid to be explained by the natural pumping action of the heart. Half the blood in the body had been sucked out. A massive haemorrhage of the brain had been followed within moments by unconsciousness and death. One man suspected the cause. One man knew: Dr. Russell V. Chillders - Chill. Psychic Investigator. He recognised the cruelly clinical mark of the feeding vampire.

Jory Sherman was born in Minnesota and grew up in West Texas, Louisiana, and Colorado. He was a magazine editor for a time and had some of his work published, including some poetry, short stories and articles. Sherman had a friend who owned a publishing company and asked him to write a novel for the company. From that offer came five more novels, all written in one year. He wrote the supernatural mystery series, "Chill," which was somewhat revolutionary for the times, but which earned him an eight book contract. He then came up with the idea for "Rivers West," a series which had each book written by a different western author. Then came the "Baron Saga," the first of which was "Grass Kingdom" which earned Sherman a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in Letters. Sherman has also won the Spur Award for his contribution to Western Literature.
