Not illustrated. ... caused us a great deal of annoyance. In Moncton, we all stopped at the American House, and while Esther and I were in the parlor, one of the ghosts rocked a large rockingchair, while she sat about fifteen feet from it. I delivered two lectures on the mystery, and left town Saturday night for Chatham, New Brunswick, Esther remaining in Moncton with Mr. White and their friends. The following notices appeared in the papers about Esther, but were not written by me, nor did I ever know positively who wrote them, never having seen them until handed to me by Mr. White, on his arrival in Chatham. It was my intention to give three lectures a week, hoping that the ghosts would knock and move objects on the stage, where Esther always sat to the "left of the center", while I lectured. THE AMHERST MYSTERY IN MONCTON. (From the Moncton Despatch, June 18, 1879.) Miss Esther Cox arrived here in care of friends, on Friday afternoon last, and a detailed account of the manifestations and working of the mystery were given in Ruddick's Hall, on Friday evening and Saturday. Sunday evening, Miss Cox essayed to attend service at the Baptist Church, but during the first singing, the ghost, which had been quiet for some days, again manifested itself by knocking, apparently on the floor of the pew in front. When told to stop by Miss Cox, it would cease the noise for a moment, but then break out worse than ever. Throughout the prayer it continued ; and when the organ began for the second singing, the noise became so distinct and disturbing that Miss Cox and party were forced to leave the Church. Upon reaching the house on Wesley Street, where they were stopping, the ghost seemed to enter into Miss Cox, and she was sick and insensible until morning. Lying upon the bed, she seemed f...

Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid

1891

Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819 1900) was appointed to the post of Astronomer Royal for Scotland and Regius Professor of Astronomy at Edinburgh University in 1846. He was respected for his practical work, and his Teneriffe, an Astronomer's Experiment (1858) is also reissued in this series. However, this book, first published in 1864, is testimony to the author's interest in 'pyramidology', and although it was so popular in his own lifetime that it was reprinted five times, his eccentric interpretation of the data he had collected by measuring all aspects of the Great Pyramid of Giza damaged his scientific reputation. Smyth was convinced that the British measurement standard of an inch as a basic unit of length was associated with the sacred cubit of the Bible. This measure was supposedly incorporated in the Pyramid, which he claimed was built under divine guidance by the Ancient Israelites, and enshrined scientific information."

Incidents in my life

1991

An autobiography of the most sensational physical medium the world has ever seen. Not only could Daniel D. Home convey messages from the spirits, just as most mediums do, but he could also produce tangible evidence of the presence of the spirits themselves. In his séances, which were attended by royalty and the leading literary and social elite of his day, the hands of the spirits touched the sitters, moved heavy furniture, and tilted tables without spilling their contents. Home could also float in the air without any visible means of support, light gas jets with his fingertips, handle red-hot coals without burning his fingers, and elongate his body by almost a foot - a feat which only saints have been known to do. Although many have speculated that Home must have been guilty of fraud, there has never been any compelling evidence of it. This Cosimo Classic is based on the Second Edition of the autobiography, which was originally published in 1864. DANIEL DOUGLAS HOME (1833-1886) was perhaps the greatest physical medium of all time. The astounding phenomena he produced first appeared during the heyday of Spiritualism in America when he was a young boy living with his aunt in Connecticut. She promptly kicked him out of the house. Home became the darling of European society and was twice married to Russian noblewomen. He never charged for his séances, which usually took place in good light. Much of what Home was reported to have done remains a mystery to this day.
