L'édition française de la Correspondance comporte seulement les lettres de Nietzsche, mais chaque section s'accompagne de notes qui exploitent abondamment le matériel recueilli par les éditeurs allemands de l'édition critique de la Correspondance générale de Nietzsche, qui rassemble également les lettres à et sur Nietzsche. Dans les deux premiers tomes, on voit comment le jeune Nietzsche, écolier à Pforta, étudiant à Bonn et à Leipzig, jeune professeur à Bâle, se dégage progressivement de l'atmosphère familiale, de la routine philologique, puis de la double fascination de Schopenhauer et de Wagner, avec quelle lucidité il juge déjà les événements et les êtres, avec quel courage il tient tête à la maladie et s'efforce de devenir lui-même.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (Ph.D., Philology, Leipzig University, 1869) was a German philosopher of the late 19th century who challenged the foundations of Christianity and traditional morality. He was interested in the enhancement of individual and cultural health, and believed in life, creativity, power, and the realities of the world we live in, rather than those situated in a world beyond. Central to his philosophy is the idea of “life-affirmation,” which involves a questioning of all doctrines that drain life's expansive energies, however socially prevalent those views might be.
