While Mrs. Bennet stalks Meryton, determined to hunt down the estate agent for Netherfield and discover who has taken the house, Emma Woodhouse wistfully walks the halls of Hartfield alone. Upon receiving a melancholy letter from their cousin, Elizabeth and Jane petition Mrs. Bennet for leave to visit Emma at Hartfield. That petition is promptly denied—none of her girls will set foot out of Hertfordshire while there is the remotest possibility that a horde of eligible gentlemen gallop in their direction. Worried over Emma’s health, Elizabeth devises a scheme to arrange for Emma to come to Longbourn. Emma Woodhouse, convinced to leave her father’s care in her sister’s capable hands, sets off to visit the Bennets. She departs her home abashed, having recently learned her lesson regarding meddling and matchmaking, thanks to her disastrous efforts of behalf of Miss Smith. At least, it had been hoped that she’d learned her lesson. Away from the watchful eye of Mr. Knightley, Emma finds she cannot resist the idea that there are five ladies, her own dear Bennet cousins, all wishing to be married. Hints are dropped in the wrong places, opinions clash, characters are misunderstood, disastrous proposals are made, confusions abound, and nobody knows if Emma’s tangled web can be unraveled in time for anybody’s happy ending.
