Nose for Trouble

2005

Anxious to get away from the pressures of the East Coast and into a climate where his trauma-induced asthma isn't a daily challenge, Dale Kinsall, DVM, hauls his baggage and his young Beagle to a vet clinic in the high desert. He arrives to a clinic populated by an eccentric staff, and a community abuzz about a recent murder. The buzz gets even louder when Dale himself stumbles across a second victim on his very first day at the a man drowned in his own drought-dusty backyard. Before much longer it becomes evident that Dale, Sully, and the clinic are all at risk, and Dale's fledgling relationship with a local colleague turns serious in more ways than one as trouble closes in on them all . . . Doranna Durgin had grand adventures on horseback in the Appalachians before turning full-time writer and ending up in the Southwestern high country with her laptop, dogs, horse, and uncontrollable imagination.

Scent of Danger

2008

In this sequel to Nose for Trouble, Dale Kinsall considers himself adjusted to his new location—to the eccentric nature of his clinic staff, to the altitude and climate of the high desert, to his new role in his community. The vet who solved the eco-murders. Of course, he doesn't anticipate the threatening series of bizarre rhyming notes on his desk, or the cavalier attitude of the local cops who were embarrassed that they didn't solve those particular eco-murders. Soon enough, everything's happening at once: the clinic is upside down over renovations, Laura's nephew is deathly ill, and then Laura herself is hit by the same feared virus shortly before Dale is blindsided in a brutal attack. Dale is the only one who thinks it might not all be coincidence...but everyone else pretty much thinks he's nuts. Everyone but Sully Beagle, that is. For Sully knows cookies, and he knows what's his...and he knows the scent of danger.

When Dale, accompanied by his sidekick, a Beagle named Sully, arrives at his new veterinary clinic in the desert, bizarre events occur from the outset.... A captivating read..." —Lynne Maxwell, Mystery Scene "...Keeps you interested from page one....I highly recommend Ms. Durgin's latest work to one and all." —Wendy Keel, Romance Reader's Connection, 4 daggers "Romance and Mystery Plus Fun: A Nose for Trouble does it all. With Beagle! ...The mystery kept me turning pages madly, when I wasn't giggling. But what really caught my heartstrings were the interactions between the main character and his dog. Nothing sappy, everything real. Written by someone who knows dogs and people, and brings out the best in both." Julie Czerneda, author of SURVIVAL
