Work on The Little Mermaid began as early as 1939, when Kay Nielsen began preparing inspirational sketches and storyboards for Hans Christian Andersenís famous fairy tale. This sketchbook contains more than 150 black-and-white sketches as well as 12 color plates featuring the color background studies done in preparation for the filmís release in 1989.
