Years later, Glory is discovered by the new owners of an old house that, unbeknownst to them, was used as a stop along the Underground Railroad.

In this book, the girls find a damaged babydoll at the home of their babysitter, Jill, an older woman who lives in the neighborhood. Rose and Lila persuade Far Nana to restore the doll, and the girls learn its story. The doll, Marissa, belonged to Jill when she was a little girl. Marissa was a gift from Jill's beloved aunt. In the process of helping their grandmother with the restoration, Rose and Lila learn the story of the special relationship between the dollhouse people and a student at the boarding school where the house was kept.

In 1832, Daisy's family died in a cholera epidemic that hit New York. Daisy and Charlotte were sent to live with the Shakers, who often took in orphans, until Daisy was retrieved by an old family friend.
