Trouble is brewing in Nexus, and for some reason, they think I can stop it. Some people are born to greatness. My mother wanted to strangle me at birth. I’ve not had an easy life, not in a world that thrives on magic. Spells to reinforce buildings. Hexes to give you the face of a supermodel. Or so I’ve been told. No one can hide their true face from me, and people get ugly when they find out my presence is the reason magic shrivels and dies. It’s not as cool as it sounds, so when I’m offered a job with the Special Monsters Unit, I take a chance and join a misfit crew to find out why the town of Nexus is a magnet for cryptids. At least I’m part of a team. I’m making friends. I’m—Finding out secrets about my past that are hard to handle. But my emotional scars will have to wait until after we deal with the monsters. Especially those with human faces.

Hide all you want. I will find you. I might not wear a cape or a mask, but as an agent for the SMU—Special Monsters Unit—I am plenty heroic. Most of the time. Accidents tend to happen a lot around me since I’m what they call a null witch. Someone who basically murders magic. Sounds cool, right? Not when it causes cursed folks to explode—literally—in my face. Gross. Not to mention I hate shopping for new clothes. Still, I love my job even if it is dangerous. Other parts of my life could use some help, though. My parentage is still a mystery. The guy I liked, well, let’s just say things got complicated. The boss hired someone new and annoying, and did I mention hot? Oh, and there appears to be ancient ruins under our town. I’d be more excited if the Cryptid Historical Society hadn’t shut us out of our own investigation. Whatever. There are plenty of monsters to go around in Nexus. Secrets too. Time for me to cause trouble in the name of good.

I don’t know who to trust anymore. Learning to use my power isn’t all fun and games, especially with the annoying Professor X, but I have to buckle down. The monster situation in Nexus isn’t getting any better. And neither is my love life. Baptiste is about to get married, and Huego, that sexy traitor, is missing. My lessons on using my ability aren’t going very well, and when my teacher goes missing, I’m back to muddling around on my own—and failing miserably. Things are getting weirder by the day, and I don’t know who to trust other than Wally. When he gets kidnapped, I have no choice but to offer myself in trade. But what if my sacrifice spells the end of everything?
