Childhood friends David and Arnaldo are two sides of the same coin—David wants to remain a virgin until he finds the woman he will love for the rest of his life, while Arnaldo revels in his own promiscuity. After the Cuban Revolution, the two friends leave the countryside to study in Havana. Before they depart, Arnaldo has a vision in which the Virgin of Copper tells him to take care of David and ensure he loses his virginity before he turns 17, or else he will fall into a deep depression that will end in suicide. David y Arnaldo son mejores amigos aunque son completamente opuestos. David prefiere no iniciarse en la vida sexual hasta encontrar el amor de su vida mientras que Arnaldo es un joven que goza de su propia promiscuidad. Después de la Revolución, ambos reciben becas para estudiar en la Habana pero antes de irse del campo, la Virgen del Cobre se le aparece a Arnaldo y le pide que vele por David, pues si no pierde su virginidad antes de los 17 años caerá en una depresión profunda y se suicidará.
