Until a century ago, fifth-century Greek Poet Bacchylides was known only by 107 non sequential lines buried in the writings of others. The discovery in 1896 of a papyrus containing his work revealed Bacchylides to the modern reader. Here David Slavitt breathes new life into the surviving 15 epinician odes and five dithyrambs of Bacchylides.
