The Morrigan continues its hunt for intel about their new enemies, preparing to visit a system on the farthest edges of what they consider the frontier. They send their new acquisition, the powerful gunboat to scout ahead, to provide them with an early warning in the event of a large enemy presence. What the scouts discover instead is a stalwart human settlement under the control of the ervas and a desperate resistance attempting to reclaim their home. As the Morrigan arrives and finds itself trapped by a powerful beam from the planet’s surface, all must race against time to uncover the mysteries of the planet and save all their lives.

A distress call summons the Morrigan to a neutral star system in the middle of the frontier, a Gold Empire merchant fleet begging for help. They arrive to find wreckage and debris, signs of a fight with their new enemies the ervas. Their investigation takes them on a journey that may well cost them their lives. Meanwhile, Rita Peck and Lisa Erris return to confederate space, determined to uncover the conspiracy that has hidden the existence of the alien threat for years. When they visit a stomping ground of confed intelligence, they find themselves hunted by a desperate group of criminals who will stop at nothing to collect their marks.

The Morrigan has suffered some setbacks. Their marine commander is presumed dead. Two of their operatives are back home on a secret mission, unable to communicate back. They lost their prototype gunboat to hijackers and now, they face an old threat that may well prove to be more than they can handle. But lives are on the line. A conspiracy must be unravelled. Forces both foreign and domestic work against them, pushing toward some victory state they have yet to uncover. As various battles come to a head, the crew of the Morrigan may well have to put everything on the line in order to preserve all they hold dear.

As they prepare for a potential fight with their two allies, Captain Markel and the crew have to decide who they can trust and whether or not the gamble is worth their lives. Meanwhile, the Peck twins are embroiled in struggles with their own. Oliver finds himself on the verge of death on a remote planet surface far from any aid. Rita and her companion Lisa Erris dive into data about the mysterious Karl Petrova in an effort to uncover his efforts in the frontier. All the while, the enemy is hot on their tail, desperate to take them into custody.

A desperate battle has left the Morrigan crippled in a distant system with no backup and little hope. Outnumbered, outgunned, damaged, and stuck, they must find a way to survive the conflict by any means necessary. Captain Markel and his crew are left with no option other than fighting to the end.
