Jacoby told the lie that he was getting engaged in order to be considered for a promotion. Then his mother found out about it. So, not only does he have to convince Miriam to pose as his fiancée at the company holiday party, he also needs her to help him not get in trouble with his mom. They've been friends for almost twenty years and Miriam is willing to help him. She has her own issue she needs help with which leads to her moving in with him. Soon close proximity and holiday cheer mix with their deception and this arrangement between friends becomes something else.
