This story of a 16-yr old runaway is told in first-person from father and daughter's perspective, chapters alternating. Rose does not feel loved. Though her father is remote, he loves her. Far From the Nest is a story of misunderstanding, not triumph, until the end. The story grew of guessing at the sense of hopelessness that confronts parents of a child lost to the certainty that leads a young person to take fateful steps before they realize they are loved. Helen, Rose's mother, tells her husband that Rose is alive, when Rose calls home on anniversary of her disappearance. Robert does not believe it, but thinks she is dead, and his wife deranged. Rose's time spent living with an African-American family (siblings, half-siblings) is central. She finds her father, Robert, too late for this world, but not too late to matter.
