1990, hardcover, Avenel Books / Random House, NY. Collection of crime stories, 24 short mysteries in all. This book was previously published in two separate volumes The Innocence of Father Brown, and The Wisdom of Father Brown. 652 pages in all. Includes a generous 10-page introduction about the author. G.K. Chesterton was a remarkable man from long ago (1874-1936) who took his talent seriously. He produced more than 100 books, including biographies, histories, short stories, plays, literary criticism, and books about religion. His finest, in the opinion of many critics are his Father Brown mysteries. Here are stories that take place all over the globe, from rural England to a small city in Germany, to Italy, and even Chicago, Illinois. Father Brown is a quiet thinker, a man of the cloth, his figure based on an actual Catholic priest. These are a delight to read because the famous literary figure in each story deals with good and evil. PBS presented a number of Father Brown mysteries. Look on Amazon to find the great film, "Father Brown," starring Alec Guinness, a film to remember.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was an English writer, philosopher, lay theologian, and literary and art critic. He was educated at St. Paul’s, and went to art school at University College London. In 1900, he was asked to contribute a few magazine articles on art criticism, and went on to become one of the most prolific writers of all time. He wrote a hundred books, contributions to 200 more, hundreds of poems, including the epic Ballad of the White Horse, five plays, five novels, and some two hundred short stories, including a popular series featuring the priest-detective, Father Brown. In spite of his literary accomplishments, he considered himself primarily a journalist. He wrote over 4000 newspaper essays, including 30 years worth of weekly columns for the Illustrated London News, and 13 years of weekly columns for the Daily News. He also edited his own newspaper, G.K.’s Weekly. Chesterton was equally at ease with literary and social criticism, history, politics, economics, philosophy, and theology.
