Wilhelm "Willi" Kasda, a young Lieutenant, attempts to raise money for a friend in need by gambling with a cold-hearted Consul. For a time, luck smiles upon Willi, but the tables turn, and he finds himself obligated to the shrewd gambler, and searching his life for someone he can go to for help.
