The graveyard shift is really starting to live up to its name. Multiple murders, blood-drained bodies, and a rookie to train: work has suddenly got quite hectic for police constable Jesse Ross. When a sharp-toothed suspect is stolen from his care and evidence of something unnatural begins to unfold, it can only get worse. Jesse quickly finds himself drawn into a dangerous case that should have nothing to do with him – alongside the first man to catch his interest for a long time, and the the last man he’s allowed to want. Despite his need to know, Jesse fully intends to leave the investigating to the detectives – but soon takes a bite to his own neck, making it hard to ignore even the minute possibility of something truly sinister, a possibility that no one else seems to want to entertain. And the rookie? Well, it’s equally hard to ignore the man who has his back through every twist, turn, and tiny mental breakdown. Luckily for Jesse, he can’t truly worry about his future or his feelings until he’s done worrying about making it out alive, and there’s an ancient evil with other plans.

It really is hard to kill what’s already dead. With Halloween over, Jesse and Cooper want nothing more than to return to normal life, but their problems are far from over. The elder they fought so hard to stop wasn’t adequately destroyed; worse, it’s missing, and remains a threat to them all. The news being delivered by an angry vampire hellbent on finishing the job that Franklin failed to doesn’t help much, either. With some suspicion-inducing help from Franklin and the promise of Jesse’s “special connection,” the pair manage to negotiate a deal: they’ll help find and stop the elder, once and for all. At least this time around, they have some idea what they’re dealing with. Or so they think, only to slowly uncover something much deeper, much darker than anything any of them expected, something even the vampires can’t begin to understand, something that’s going to change everything – not least of all Jesse and Cooper themselves.
