Une voix se lève, au début de la Monarchie de Juillet, pour dénoncer la destruction du patrimoine architectural et artistique français : celle de Victor Hugo. Dans « Guerre aux démolisseurs », paru en mars 1832, le jeune poète regrette le « vieux souvenir de la France » qui « s’en va avec la pierre sur laquelle il était écrit ». Il déplore le vandalisme, moderne et bourgeois, qui se répand et ravage le vieux Paris.
