Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) is regarded as a master of short story writing. First published in 1884, “Happiness” is one of his best-known tales. It is centered around the simple “bonheur” of a poor, enduring love. This edition contains the 1909 English translation by Alfred de Sumichrast (1845-1933) and Adolphe Cohn (1851-1930). It also includes the beautiful essay “Guy de Maupassant” written by Henry James (1843-1916) in 1888.

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed in it - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.
