Born in Philadelphia in 1856, Harrison Smith Morris was an American businessman, philanthropist, and prolific author who wrote at least 17 volumes of poetry, fiction, and essays. He also held a variety of jobs, including managing director of the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts (1893-1905), editor of Lippincott's Magazine, art editor of the Ladies' Home Journal, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the National Academy of Design. and president of the Wharton Steel Company (1909-1917).. He died in 1948.
