An astonishing imaginary autobiography of the poet Charlotte Mew. It tells of her and her sister's vow of chastity after their brother and sister had gone mad so that they may not pass on the strain of insanity. All of Mew's intensity and sexuality, repressed in her day to day life, pours out of her poetry which brought her to the attention of Thomas Hardy who fell madly in love with her. She never let him consummate their relationship. Constructed around the poems, this is a tragic & extraordinary story of an eccentric woman - who wore her father's cut down clothes - and who eventually commited suicide.
